Road update part 2

Hey everyone!

I’m writing to you from lovely Detroit. We had a show last night in Lansing, so we drove back asap to do laundry, see our gals, etc… Even for a day, it’s nice to be back! So what it’s still freezing and snowy on the ground! That’s okay, we’re going to Canada where it’s warm and sunny 365 days a year (sorry, sarcasm doesn’t translate well into a blog!) for two weeks…

Source: myspace.com/hifihandgrenades

So, it’s been great so far. We had a great time playing with Bad Religion and the Briggs. Both really cool bands with great people involved (band, crew, etc…)
We made our way from San Diego (thanks to our pals in SD for the hookup, the ride through the desert was wonderful!) to Ft. Collins. There we hooked up with our pals Jeff and Stacie, Jade and Clay, and the most excellent hounds, Chopper and Ozzy. I have to tell you, Ft. Collins is beautiful, the people are all really cool (except for the stupid hippy students, but that’s a universal problem), Stacie has an amazing salsa recipe, and Jeff makes the meanest Carne Asada this side of Mexico! We went to the Blasting Room and hung out with the drum ogre himself, Mr. Bill Stevenson. We played a kick ass show at Surfside with Jeff’s new band, Underminer. The band also features a certain Karl Alvarez on guitar and vocals (you mighta heard of one or two of his ’other’bands… Descendents/ALL?) They were great, Turbojugend Ft. Collins was in effect, and it was awesome. Rich drank so much, he turned into his alter ego, Uncle Scotch. Good times…

One thing to remember if you are a touring band, try to book gigs in college towns when the students actually a.) don’t have finals to study for and therefore, actually go OUT…, and b.) aren’t on Spring Break and therefore, are actually in town to go to said gig. Lawrence, KS and DeKalb, IL are prime examples. We did play with cool bands in Lawrence. Thanks to Super Black Market for making it happen! In DeKalb, we played to tables, chairs, and a couple bands. We couldn’t leave fast enough to get home.

Made it home yesterday morning, chilled for a few, and off to Lansing for an all-ages St. Pat’s gig. Very kick ass! Thanks to Cheap Girls, and Bermuda Mohawk productions! We had a blast…

So, more as it follows… Canada with the Foos and Against Me!, and we’re playing our own gigs most every night, so check the dates on the myspace page. Then we’re off to Japan in April, Australia in June.

Our new record is available now in Canada (see blog post below for more info), an exclusive Japanese EP is available too (also see below), and we’ll be pressing the full-length ourselves when we get back from Japan, so we’ll have cd’s at the US shows asap. We’ll keep you posted on info as it comes. Look for a record release show in Detroit sometime around May(?)…

until next time,
John

New Nerf Herder

NERF HERDER SET TO RETURN WITH NEW CD “IV” ON OGLIO RECORDS A NEW HOPE FOR PUNK POP NERD ROCK FUN BEGINS ON APRIL 29Los Angeles California – Nerd Rock favorites Nerf Herder will be releasing their fourth album entitled “IV” on April 29th via their new deal with Oglio Records, distributed by Fontana/Universal. “IV” is produced by Angus Cooke (former The Ataris), owner of legendary Santa Barbara based Orange Whip Studios. Nerf Herder will tour to support “IV” which includes odes to cassettes, orange backpacks, golfshirts, orb clutching dragons, manatees, the awesomeness of Led Zeppelin, Santa Barbara, high school dances and later high school reunions all mixed with perhaps the album’s greatest secret ingredient, unrequited love.

The razor witted “IV” continues in the vein of the classic Nerf Herder of “Sorry”, “High Five Anxiety”, “Mr. Spock” and “Van Halen” fame, securing the band as one of melodic Geek Rock’s leading lights. Lev Grossman from Time Magazine’s “Nerd World” blog recently had not one but two Nerf Herder tracks in their Top 10 All Time Nerd-Pop and Nerdcore Songs. The new track “Led Zeppelin Rules” is an iTunes pre-release digital single, the non album “Affirmative Action” is an iTunes exclusive bonus track and the first official single from Nerf Herder “IV” is the lethally hummable pop masterpiece “WTC #7”. New music videos include “Oh Me, Oh My” and an animated video for “Manatee” by the brilliant Nathan Mazur (“Do You Like Waffles” from the Parry Gripp solo CD “For Those About To Shop, We Salute You”).

The band takes their name from a Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back reference — when Princess Leia insults Han Solo with “Why you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!”. They are also responsible for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer theme song and performed as the very last band to play show’s fictional venue during Buffy’s final season. Nerf Herder music can also be heard in the MLB 2K7 video game.

Nerf Herder is Parry Gripp, Charlie Dennis and Steve Sherlock. Linus of Hollywood will join the band for their 2008 live tour. Visit the Nerf Herder websites for tour dates and more. Get Nerf Herder 300 dpi cover art and listen to the full album streaming at the Oglio Records website, www.oglio.com.

upcoming full-length, touring, etc…: An Entry by John Speck

Hi everybody!
I’m writing this in beautiful, sunny Los Angeles. It’s a nice change of pace to see/feel sun and warm weather. Detroit is freezing, miserable cold and snowy. If you’ve ever seen the movie ‘True Romance’, the opening montage of the city is a pretty accurate portrayal of the shitty winter weather we deal with each year. As Gus, our manager/brosef says, “No wonder all anyone does in Detroit is drink!”

Lots of cool stuff going on. We’ve been really busy and I apologize for not getting some info out there sooner.

We just finished a short midwest tour with The Loved Ones, Gaslight Anthem, and the Arrivals. What a blast! We were all really taken aback at how great all the bands got on; usually it’s fun, but this was like a Brodeo from the get-go. So, Thanks to all the wonderful folks who made it possible, and THANKS to all the great people at the shows who caught our set, your messages are inspiring! It’s pretty awesome to meet total strangers who really like the music you’re playing.

You also might have noticed we’re getting lots of airplay on the Sirius punk channel. That’s been a total surprise to us, we don’t know how they got the music, but we’re grateful and stoked!

We’re doing some gigs with Bad Religion here in Southern California, and then through the midwest on our own, headed north to start the tour in Canada with the Foos and Against Me! We met the AM! guys the other night in Detroit at the Foos gig. We heard mention of a Foosball table the AM! dudes bring with them. Seeing as Tony and I are Foosball nerds, we thought we would represent Detroit with a little friendly competition while on tour. We had an ‘ice-breaker’ match with them after the gig, and we lost with a respectable 10-6. We’ll have our game faces on come Canada!

The full length is being released on Canadian label New Romance for Kids on March 11th! Entitled ‘Carry On’, it is a short, sweet blast of 10 tunes in under 25 minutes. We recorded the basics in September in LA with John Lousteau at Studio 606, finished it back home in January, and it’ll be here asap! We’ll probably have some to sell when we get back from Canada.
Tracks are:
1- Cut Strings
2- Stupid
3- Carry On
4- Smiling Judas
5- Hold Fast
6- Facing the Firing Squad
7- Heart of Steel
8- Around Again
9- Sunset to Sunrise
10- Detroit Has a Skyline

I know, you’re saying, “I already have 5 of these songs on the first EP!” Well, these are brand-new recordings. The first EP was really a demo we cut a month after we first formed the band, so these versions are a little different in some cases, maybe a little tighter and more settled-in, definitely a more fully-realized recording. And a cool cover of Superchunk’s ‘Detroit Has a Skyline’, which was one of the first songs we ever played at practice when we were messing around.

Go here to see the artwork! Chopper, you are amazing!

We will likely press up a thousand on our own for sale through mail and at US shows, etc… More details asap. The full-length will also be coming out soon this year in Japan and Australia.

Speaking of Japan, we are releasing an exclusive 5-song EP on FAEC (Rough Trade Japan) around March 26th. It will feature 5 brand-new, unreleased tunes. We recorded them in February in Detroit. Some old stuff, some brand new stuff, and a cool cover song. We’ll also have some of these to sell soon!
Tracks are:
1- Something Old
2- Holding Out
3- Another Face
4- Right Back
5- Sometime to Return

AND (drumroll, please) WE ARE GOING TO JAPAN IN APRIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We’re gonna play three shows with the Foos. I can’t tell you how stoked we are. Rich and Ryan have been with the Suicide Machines before, but Tony and I have never been there, so we are preparing for sensory overload! Ramen the way it was intended to taste! Strange things in cans! Beautiful scenery and culture, amazing music fans, and stuff we can’t imagine! WOO HOO!!!!

Can you tell we’re excited? :D

So, there’s a quick update! I’ll write some more as soon as I get some time. Gotta go change strings and get ready for the gig tonight.

Hope everyone is doing great. We’ll see you soon!

John Speck
